EDITORIAL
We are in sight of the end of Term 3, and our Year 12s are very much at the pointy end of their time at Trinity. They have worked hard in their studies and participated keenly in the cocurricular program. And, importantly, they have led the student cohort well. I have really enjoyed getting to know them over the last five terms, and I look forward to celebrating their final days with them in Term 4. There will be not much rest for them over the holiday break, with revision sessions in the first week, and trial exams in the final week.
We continue to do much for others at Trinity, with perhaps the highlight of this term being the Bloody Long Walk on Sunday 24 August. Over 120 members of our community walked to raise funds for the Mito Foundation. This year, we contributed almost $36,000 – a remarkable effort. You will recall with sadness that we lost Hugh Blunt (OTG 2018) earlier this year to Mitochondrial Disease.
And just last Friday, our Year 12 boys organised a White Ribbon event, where students from neighbouring schools joined Trinity students to raise awareness about domestic violence against women. More than 150 students came to Trinity and enjoyed a sausage sizzle followed by a talk in Arnold Hall from Tara Hartnett. Tara sits as a Magistrate at the Dandenong Court, where she frequently adjudicates in domestic violence cases. Her stories were eye-opening and spell-binding, and her message was clear: it’s up to men to make changes if we are to address the scourge of domestic violence in Australia.
Last Thursday morning I attended the annual Junior School Father’s Day Breakfast. We had a magician entertain us, and he had the boys enthralled with his tricks and humour. How he managed to remove my watch without me knowing is still a major mystery. He’s either extremely good, or I’m losing it!
Last Sunday, I also had the pleasure of attending our Service of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Communion at the Chapel of the Holy Trinity. Conducted by our Chaplains and Bishop Lindsay Urwin, one boy was baptised and 12 others were confirmed.
The last two weeks of term will see a music extravaganza. The Jazz Concert that followed the White Ribbon event on Friday evening was fabulous, with boys from across Junior and Senior School levels performing in eight stand-alone ensembles. The much-acclaimed Stage Band closed the night with The Jazz Police, by Gordon Goodwin. It was, literally, a show-stopper.
On Tuesday night I will enjoy the St Paul’s Choir Soiree in the Crawley Centre and on Wednesday and Thursday this week we have the Junior School Gala and Concerto Concerts, both at the Hawthorn Town Hall. And just to make sure we get our fill of performing arts, the Middle School Play will run on Friday and Saturday nights.
To close out the term, our boys will attempt to defend their AGSV Athletics title on 11 September at Lakeside Stadium, and our singers will entertain us at the Choral Concert at Hawthorn Town Hall later that evening.
To those who are travelling over the holidays, do so safely. To all of you, take time to recharge the batteries and, hopefully, appreciate some warmer weather.

Headmaster
NOTICES AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
Main Reception hours during holidays and Term 4
Main Reception will be closed during the middle week of the upcoming school holidays – Monday 23 September to Thursday 26 September, with Friday 27 September being the AFL Grand Final eve public holiday.
During this time Main Reception will not be manned, and the front door will be locked. Calls to the School’s main phone number will be diverted to voicemail, which will be retrieved on Monday 30 September.
The trinity@trinity.vic.edu.au email address will not be monitored until Monday 30/9
Please also be aware that during Term 4, Main Reception will be closing at 4.30pm instead of its current 5.00pm closing time. This is a trial for the remainder of the School year, and if successful, will be implemented permanently from the start of Term 1, 2020.

FROM THE ELC
Last Thursday and Friday morning, there was a buzz in the ELC as we welcomed all dads for our Father’s Day breakfasts. The children were so excited to share this special time with dads, grandpas and friends, and carefully made presents and cards – including colourful ties – which were very well received. The children proudly showed their visitors around their rooms, introducing friends and engaging them in some of their favourite experiences.
We now look forward to Grandparents and Friends Mornings this week, and know the children will be just as enthusiastic about sharing time with these family members.
A reminder to parents that forms for the Term 3 Holiday Program have now been distributed. If you wish for your child to participate in this program, please ensure that the forms are completed and returned no later than Friday 6 September.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
AFL State Championships in the Junior School
After winning the District, Divisional and Regional finals, our Junior School AFL teammade it through to the State finals, held at St Helena in Greensborough on Wednesday 21 August.
In our first game we played against Guthrie Street Primary School. In a close and very windy encounter we held on and won 2.3.15 to 1.4.10.
In our second game we played St Mary’s Sale. After we settled, we were able to open the game up and we ran out winners by 14 points.
We knew our last pool match against St Joseph’s Warrnambool was going to be extremely tough as they had won both of their games. We had a quiet first half and found ourselves four goals down at half time. We then kicked four goals in eight minutes to run out winners by two points in a thriller!
In the Grand Final and playing for the state title we played Marymede Primary School. Unfortunately, they were too good for us but we worked hard, right to the very end.
It has been a pleasure working, coaching and getting to know these boys and we are already looking forward to 2020.

CHAPLAIN’S CHAT
Recently, I sat down to watch ‘The Final Quarter’, which focuses on the last few years of Adam Goodes’ AFL career. Goodes had an amazing career playing at the Swans, but was pushed out of the game because he stood up against racism.
During the documentary, I felt extremely embarrassed and ashamed at how Australians had responded to him at the time. The film leaves you thinking that it is not just people in the media who have some negative views about Indigenous Australians, but indeed that many Australians share these views.
During the documentary, it became clear that people thought that calling an Indigenous person ‘King Kong’ or an ‘Ape’ was acceptable or humorous. Adam Goodes was just a ‘bit of a sook’ for calling it out and expressing distaste for the comments. So, I guess along those lines, the booing was just because he was a bad sport or because he staged for free kicks. But the documentary left you with no possible defense of this viewpoint, Adam Goodes did not see it as a joke he was deeply offended and distressed by the treatment. He interpreted it as racist and, in my opinion, it was racists.
The material in ‘The Final Quarter’ is very difficult to watch, and it can leave you feeling a little bit powerless. In a lot of ways, it would have been easier for Goodes to accept the racist comments, and just brush them aside (if that is even possible). But thankfully for all of Australia he didn’t. Instead, he is attempting to make Australia a more tolerant and accepting country by calling out racism.
It’s important that we become accepting and tolerant of different races and cultures, particularly Indigenous Australians. If there is one thing you can learn from the documentary it is that words matter, and they ought to be used responsibly.
The Bible says that ‘God created us in His own image, in the image of God he created them’ (Genesis 1:27). God created all people in his image, meaning that we are all the same, all humankind is loved by God, and therefore we should love all people regardless of race.
At Trinity, I hope that we can learn from the Adam Goodes situation, and that we can be leaders of tolerance and acceptance – people who are careful in how they use our words and recognise that words are hurtful.
I’d love to hear your thoughts! Please email me at halej@trinity.vic.edu.au.
Have a great week.

Assistant Chaplain

Last year’s stall was a huge success – we pretty much sold out! We couldn’t have done it without all your generous donations.
We all have at least one item hanging in the wardrobe that we adore but will never actually wear! Now is the time to cleanse, throw your wardrobe doors open, and let those unworn jailbirds fly! Did you know the fashion industry is the world’s second most polluting industry? How can you help? Join the Trinity fashion merry go round. It’s simple, donate your unwanted clothing treasures, then on Fair day, head along to our stall and pick up something just perfect for you!
What we need to run another successful stall:
- Clothing: Quality used and new women’s, men’s and children’s clothes
- Shoes: clean good quality only please
- Handbags, belts and hat pins
- Shopping bags: if you have bags from boutiques/fashion shops that you don’t have a need for – we can reuse them on the day
