From the Principal
This week I attended the Merritt House Breakfast and Chapel. It was a convivial occasion over breakfast and a nice, meaningful Chapel service. The guest speaker was the Rev’d Natalie Dixon-Monu from Boroondara Community Outreach, who is well known to many in the Trinity Community because of our ongoing connection to the organisation. Natalie was there to speak about the work that she does, and the importance in the current context of the ‘Good Grub’ program, for which Merritt House was raising money. I believe Hindley House will be fundraising for the same initiative. I know that there are many and varied fundraising efforts across our whole school.
It is clear to all of us that the impacts of COVID in our local area have been profound. Businesses struggling, various public restrictions and the spectre of masks in abundance confirm that. What is less publicly visible is the impact that this point in history has had on some of our most disadvantaged. The Good Grub program – at the height of lockdowns – was producing more food and establishing more support mechanisms than at any other time in its history. The scaling up of volunteering to manage the demand for those on low or no income, and the sheer volume of food needed to sustain people is dizzying to hear about. While those peak moments have passed, it is clear that it will not be a return to the former levels of support, but rather that there is now, in Boroondara, a bigger group of homeless or dislocated people in need than before COVID.
Through Harambee, we have provided support at a ‘hands on’ level and there has been worthy financial support through our student led initiatives as well. The House system is a compelling vehicle for advocacy and socially aware activity, as has been evidenced by the fundraising efforts underway. It is important that our students engage with the societal issues that challenge our most vulnerable, and it is impressive that they choose to do so.

From the ELC
Our ELC parents have been part of Parent Teacher Interviews this week. These interviews are a valuable way for the school and families to work together to remain fully informed about their children’s current learning and development.
Research shows that children are much more likely to reach their full potential in life when their family and schools work together. These benefits are evident when families and educators exchange information regularly and collaborate on consistent approaches to daily routines, child development and learning.
Parent teacher interviews enable the teacher to share the child’s learning and development, reflect on learning outcomes and goals, inform, assist, and guide families on their child’s progression or how their child can be supported or extended. This one-on-one time also gives parents the opportunity to share their thoughts.
Working in partnership with our parents and teachers develops ways to provide opportunities for children to enhance their learning and independent thinking, to create and collaborate as well as share and negotiate thoughts and ideas. When schools and families work together in partnership, it creates a positive, powerful foundation, which is so important for building happy, contented learners.
‘Learning and teaching should not stand on opposite banks and just watch the river flow by; instead, they should embark together on a journey down the water. Through an active, reciprocal exchange, teaching can strengthen learning and how to learn.’ – Malaguzzi, L.

Head of Junior School for a Day
Two very lucky students have enjoyed being the Head of Junior School for the Day. David Luo and Jayden Jassal’s parents were the lucky bidders at the live auction at the Trinity Green and Gold Ball last term.
On Monday 18 July the Junior School welcomed Head of Junior School, David Luo. On Monday 25 July the Junior School welcomed Head of Junior School, Jayden Jassal. Both students attended meetings in Mr Nalder’s office with the Deputy Heads of Junior School, Miss Madden and Mr Vedelsby. They gave out Smileys and Mitres to students, chaired the captain’s meeting and gave out honour certificates at assembly. They visited classrooms and welcomed visitors to the school. It was a great experience for David and Jayden and all the boys enjoyed seeing the boys around the school and calling them Mr Luo and Mr Jassal.

David and Jayden addressed the Junior School weekly assembly, speaking to all students in Prep to Year 6 before presenting the week’s Honour Certificates.
Jayden with Year 6 Captains, hosting a meeting with Grant; presenting at assembly.
The boys took to their roles with enthusiasm, proposing several possible changes (like extending lunch play time) and taking on feedback from students across the day. Students across the school thoroughly enjoyed having ‘Mr Luo’ and ‘Mr Jassal’ as their Head of Junior School for the days!

AGSV All Schools Winter Round Robin
The Year 6 All Schools AGSV Winter Round Robin took place on Tuesday 19 July at Peninsula Grammar School, Mount Eliza with the boys fielding teams in AFL, Handball, Soccer, T-Ball and Tennis. The purpose of the round robin competitions is to introduce inter-school sport, enable students to participate in a variety of sports as well as foster positive relationships and sportsmanship amongst cohorts who will soon be participating against each other in the Senior School AGSV weekend competitions.
The Trinity boys demonstrated great sportsmanship across the day, encouraging one another, setting up their teammates for success and representing the school with pride. Some highlights for the day included some fantastic passing on the soccer and AFL grounds to set up some great team goals, tennis players helping their oppositions to position themselves on the court, marked improvements shown by the T-Ball players over the course of the day and a Trinity v Trinity handball match in which some boys were supported by their peers to score their very first goals!

Library News
TGS is an IPSHA (Independent Primary School Heads of Australia) school, with our Head of Junior School, Mr Nalder, as the State Branch President for Victoria. I was fortunate to represent our school in New South Wales to co-host a collaborative meeting with library staff representatives from other IPSHA schools. We shared professional learning and ideas for growth, ranging from how to promote and implement reading challenges, to discussions about the structure of our library lessons. Staff reflected on the benefits of belonging to IPSHA, including, ‘I love the meetings, sharing ideas, opening up opportunities to visit other libraries, information gathering, meeting other librarians, and learning new ways to provide the best learning experience for our students’. Staff in the Owen Library look forward to continuing to nurture relationships with NSW and to hosting a Library IPSHA meeting in the near future with schools in the Victorian branch.

I visited the State Library of NSW, which is housing an exhibition called Imagine – the Wonder of Picture Books – a celebration of Australian authors and illustrators. Many lesson ideas related to current picture books were observed, and I am excited to implement them into our program for our Trinity students. I was also pleased and proud to notice that our own collection of original artworks from Australian illustrators hanging on the walls in the Owen Library is similar to the collection featured in the State Library.

We gave them the old ‘RAZZLE DAZZLE’!
The curtain has closed on the 2022 Trinity/Ruyton Musical, ‘CHICAGO- High School Edition’. How fortunate we were to be gifted with stellar performances by our actors, musicians and dedicated student-led crew. The production involved over 90 Trinity and Ruyton students and was a testament to their dedication and impressive talents. By the time the lights dimmed in the auditorium on opening night, the production was in the capable hands of our young people and they did the most amazing job. Please see below some photos of the production.

Creating Ripples
This week our St Paul’s choristers, junior and senior leaders, as well as Mr Farrer, Mr Nalder, Ms Fairlie and myself had the pleasure of attending ‘Anglican School’s Day’ at St Paul’s Cathedral. This event gathered teachers and students from Anglican schools across Victoria to reflect on a theme of ‘Creating Ripples’, which was essentially about having the courage and imagination to see a good idea through from the first ‘splash’ to the ensuing ripples and waves. We enjoyed musical items from various schools (as well as the efforts of the TGS choir), a dramatic presentation of the gospel and there were times for meaningful discussion. Trinity was ably represented by the students who attended and we enjoyed opening the guest preacher, Rev Paul Joy’s gift to all the schools – a packet of chocolate ripple biscuits!
