Year 8 Curriculum

In Year 8, the first semester follows the same pattern of the core program with the LOTE elective(s). This serves to consolidate boys’ knowledge and skills in the core subjects while still offering them rich, empirical learning as they find what interests and challenges them in this second year of the Middle Secondary suite.  We add to this second-semester core program the Civics/Financial Literacy unit which all boys will take.

In the second semester, we offer some additional elective choices for boys to respond to different learning opportunities or to explore more intensively something that is of interest to them.

All boys will choose from one of three Problem Solver electives. These are offered by a pair or group of Faculties, and prioritise critical and creative thinking, collaboration and communication, in the spirit of 21stC learning.   Each boy will also choose at least one Science elective from what is on offer.

Other electives are offered under the aegis of Faculties. A boy will choose at this point whether he wishes to continue with his LOTE studies, and whether with one or two LOTEs.

A boy taking a LOTE study will have TWO more electives available to him (Science and ONE other); a boy not taking a LOTE study will have THREE electives available to him (Science and TWO others). A boy choosing to retain two LOTEs will choose ONE Science elective and does not need to choose any others.
