Mobile Device Use at TGS: Changing our approach to strengthen wellbeing, learning and relationships
Following discussion with staff and parents, we are making changes to our Mobile Device Policy from the beginning of 2019. From the start of Term 1, all mobile devices must be turned off or placed on silent and locked in the student’s locker from 8.15am – 3.15pm.
While technology has had a rich and incalculable impact on education, there is a growing volume of global research that indicates a real need to limit the amount of screen time we have each day, for the sake of our physical and emotional wellbeing. Schools share that responsibility with their families.
At its heart, the change in our Mobile Device Policy is about helping our students to be safe and healthy. We believe these changes will:
- enable the boys to concentrate and engage more fully in their learning, away from notifications, distractions, and the urge to check their phone;
- assist us to create a safer and more supportive learning environment: currently, devices not on the school network cannot be monitored and inappropriate sites cannot be blocked;
- encourage the boys to develop stronger social skills and build deeper relationships with their peers; and
- empower the boys to improve their physical and mental health by unplugging during the day.
Mobile Devices may not be accessed at all during the school day, including at recess and lunchtime. Boys will only be able to use their devices when asked to do so by teachers for a specific learning activity. If a boy is seen using his mobile device during the day, the device will be taken from him and will be available for collection at the end of the school day.
Parents who need to make urgent contact with their sons during the school day can leave a message via School Reception. If students need to make urgent contact with parents during the school day they can do so via Student Admin.
We acknowledge this new approach will require some adjustments and we ask for the support of all our families during its implementation. We look forward to sharing more details in the coming weeks and months.

Massive Murray Paddle
Trinity’s kayaking squad took part in the 50th running of the Massive Murray Paddle – the old ‘Murray Marathon’. Nowadays, teams raise money for a cause of their choice, and the two Trinity teams raised over $1000 for Mittagundi Outdoor Education Centre to give Victorian youth similar outdoor opportunities to those the boys receive at Trinity.
Thank you to the parents who take care of the significant logistical and catering requirements for the week, and to Peter O’Leary (coach), who kept the boys on the water day by day.
The Trinity boys were recognised for their skill, enthusiasm, encouragement, helpfulness and positive spirit with the Nyerna Award. Nyerna is a Wemba Wemba word meaning ‘to sit, to listen, to hear, to remember’.
Our Trinity team was Chris Burns (C), Callan Baker, Robbie Burns, Nathan Jones, Mason Lewis, Nick Moran, Ed Beckwith (C), Alex Brown, Sam Crichton, Charles Harpin, Seb Ryder, Callum Traverso.

2018 Energy Breakthrough
The 2018 Energy Breakthrough was held in Maryborough over the weekend.
This event involves a 24-hour trial in which students from secondary schools around Australia race Human Powered Vehicles around a street circuit of 1.58km.
This year, Trinity entered two teams in the Energy Efficient Vehicles (EEV) category, with our senior team Back in Black (528 laps / 834km) placing second in the trial, and our development team – Granny Smith (469 laps / 744km) – coming fifth.
The event was a success thanks to the commitment of the parents, students and staff involved. A great community effort! The staff and boys are already talking about how to go one better at the 2019 trial.
