FROM THE PRINCIPAL
As we emerge from the long weekend, there was a chance for most to take a breath and rest a little from the demands of school routine, camps, sporting pursuits and performing arts. In the background, however, the evolution of the Coronavirus continues – as the recent experience at Carey Grammar demonstrates – and the implications for our school community evolve swiftly too.
Last week we cancelled or postponed several eagerly anticipated overseas trips that were due to take place in the Easter holidays. It was disappointing to do so as our boys and their teachers were very keen to go. Since then, Victoria’s Chief Health Officer has issued updated advice that overseas school excursions should cease (except to New Zealand and Canada).
At Trinity we have been increasing our diligence in educating our students, practising good hygiene and promoting the frequent use of hand sanitiser around the school. We are looking to ensure that we care for each other through the development and consistency of our messaging and actions.
We have also been planning for the possibility of a school closure. The School’s Leadership Team has been putting contingencies in place designed to offer meaningful and age appropriate learning via electronic means where applicable. Of course, as we look forward to major events and gatherings, such as HPAF on Thursday for Senior School, we do so with an understanding that some arrangements may need to be altered. We will communicate any changes to the students and families involved as soon as possible.
Considering our day to day obligations to each other at Trinity, it is important that students and staff who are suffering from any flu like symptoms do not attend school and seek medical care. Obviously, if any member of your family has had contact with anyone affected in the Carey Grammar case, it is important that your child remain at home and you contact the relevant Head of School.
Looking ahead to the term break, those families that are planning to travel overseas please consult https://www.smartraveller.gov.au for advice and be aware that based on the countries you visit or transit through, we ask that you contact your Head of School should the countries be classified as Level 2 or 3. Students or family members may not be able to attend school for a 14 day isolation period depending on the advice being issued at the start of Term Two.
There is understandable concern in the community regarding these matters. We need to respond to the best advice available and work diligently to care for each other by our actions. Thank you in anticipation as you seek to do so.
You are welcome to contact your Head of School or me with any questions or concerns.

Principal

Responsible Pet Ownership Program
This week the children in our Four-Year-Old group had the wonderful opportunity of engaging in a Responsible Pet Ownership program. The hands-on experience allowed the children to practise with a real dog and learn the proper procedures to follow when meeting or living with a furry friend. They were also made aware of how to respond when a dog seems a little out of character and irritated. The incursion was an eye-opener for most of the children and assisted in developing their confidence as they practised approaching the dog and asking the owner before patting it.
We look forward to more incursions and events that will provide the children with hands-on learning to spark joy and wonder.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
Last week, at the Prep to Year 2 Swimming Display, it was wonderful to see all boys participating and having fun in the water in what was a very well-run event. Seeing so many parents supporting the boys in their efforts was also a highlight.
The South Yarra District Swimming Carnival (for the SSV swimming team) also took place last week. It was held at MSAC and there were many notable performances in all three age group categories, leading to the Trinity team, once again, narrowly winning the overall Boys’ District Trophy. Best of luck to the boys who qualified through to the Beachside Divisional Carnival.
This week, students in Year 4 and Year 6 departed for Camp Rumbug (from Monday to Wednesday) with Year 6 continuing onto Waratah Bay (from Wednesday to Friday). Meanwhile, the Year 5s travelled to their camp in Portsea (from Monday to Wednesday). During these outdoor adventure camps boys were able to build stronger relationships, and continue to develop their resilience, whilst living and acting on the PYP learner profile attributes: balanced, reflection, risk-taker, inquirer, caring, communicator, knowledgeable, principled, open-minded and thinkers.
The boys faced and conquered many challenges throughout the camps, which was pleasing to observe and to hear about. Whether it was climbing the steep hills, drinking water that wasn’t quite as nice as our lovely Melbourne water, or making a raft that was ‘supposed’ to float, boys were out of their comfort zones. When they reflected on the activities, boys were able to make connections between how these adventures develop knowledge that enables us to be better communicators and more caring to each other in a variety of environments.

Chaplain’s Chat
Empowered women will change our world
At the MCG on Sunday with over 86 000 in the crowd watching the Women’s World Cup Cricket Final, I turned to my Year 12 daughter, Annie, and said, ‘How good is this?’
She smiled and replied, ‘Dad, it’s only taken 2000 years for this event to happen.’
In my travels around the world I am often moved by the strength and faith of the women I encounter. Faced with raising families with little income, food and shelter, mothers embrace the struggle of life with gratitude and thank God each day for what they have. I am saddened at the desperate plight of so many women and the poverty so many of them face in our world.
On International Women’s Day it is worth reflecting on the following facts about gender equality in Australia:
- This year, Australia dropped from 15th to 44th on the OECD’s Global Gender Gap Index.
- Australian women retire with 47% less superannuation than men.
- In 2011-12, 39% of murders in Australia were the result of domestic violence.
- In the Federal Parliament, 23% of government MPs are women.
- Only 16% of students who graduate in science, technology, engineering and mathematics are women.
- Women spend about 80% more time on unpaid housework than men.
- One in three women will suffer from anxiety.
Gender equality around the world has even a longer way to go. In societies where there is deep poverty, women are pushed to the margins. Here a few facts on gender equality in our world:
- In Niger, 76% of all girls under 18 are married.
- Over 650 million women alive today were married as children. Each year more than 12 million girls marry before the age of 18.
- According to the latest UN global estimates, 303,000 women a year die in childbirth, or as a result of complications arising from pregnancy. This equates to about 830 women dying each day – roughly one every two minutes.
- Around the world 62 million girls are not in school.
- Women do seven years more of unpaid work than men over their lifetimes.
- It is estimated 35% of women have experienced physical or sexual abuse at some point in their lives.
Sunday was more than just a cricket game; it was a huge milestone for women’s sport and a reminder for all of us too see what is possible and how much greater our world could be with equal opportunity for women. Every woman in the world should be able to use her voice and pursue her potential and we must all continue to work together to break down the barriers that still hold women back. We are all on the journey towards gender equality. Equality will empower women and empowered women will change our world.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS
Morning Tea with the Principal – Thursday 5 March
A special gathering was held in recognition of the families who were affected by the delayed start to their 2020 school year, due to imposed quarantine restrictions. These parents and their sons missed the excitement of starting a new year at Trinity. Due to these extraordinary circumstances, parents were also unable to attend the various Information Evenings or Welcome Morning Teas, meet new parents, or have the opportunity to meet and hear our new Principal, Adrian Farrer, speak at these events.
The Morning Tea provided an opportunity for Adrian, School Council members and Trinity staff to thank these parents and welcome them back to school.
Thank you to all those parents who were able to join us.
Parents’ Association Annual General Meeting
All Parents’ Association members are invited to the Trinity Grammar School Parents’ Association (PA) Annual General Meeting (AGM) for 2020 at Hudson House on Tuesday, 17 March 2020 at 7.00pm.
Amongst the order of business of the AGM is the election of the Officers of the Association and Committee Members of the Association. This is not same as being a PA Member. Every parent and legal guardian of a student at the School automatically qualifies as a Member of the Association under the PA Rules, unless they opt-out of the Association by writing and email to the Secretary at pa@trinity.vic.edu.au.
Members interested in nominating as an Officer and / or Member of the Committee must complete and sign the nomination form, and return to the Secretary at pa@trinity.vic.edu.au, no less than seven (7) days prior to the date fixed for the AGM.
Trinity Fine Foods 2020
Last year, Trinity Fine Foods made a significant contribution to not only the finances of the Trinity Fair but support within the Trinity Community.
We are now seeking donations of seasonal fruit and vegetables, sugar, vinegars and oils so that novice and experienced preservers alike can continue to weave their magic. We’re also seeking used jars purchased from Trinity Fine Foods last year. Produce may be dropped off at Hudson House or collection can be arranged.
A very successful Preserving Day was hosted by Karlee Scott-Murphy in February and we will aim for another after the school holidays. If you can’t make it, please consider donating produce. All welcome, many hands make light work! More details will follow.
Don’t hesitate to email me with any preserving questions.
