A STATEMENT ON THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S REVIEW OF RELIGIOUS FREEDOMS
Faith-based schools have been the subject of headlines this last week after the leak of Philip Ruddock’s review into Religious Freedoms, and, in particular, whether these schools can reject or expel LGBT+ students under protections given by Section 38 of the Sex Discrimination Act.
Given the ongoing commentary on this matter, we think it’s important you hear something from us.
As an independent Anglican School, Trinity’s ethos and values are shaped by the Christian faith. To the best of our knowledge, the religious exemptions in question have never been used at Trinity. Indeed, they are absolutely out of step with our deep commitment to be a safe and supportive place for all students, families and staff, regardless of their sexuality, faith position, race and ethnicity, or ability. There is no place for these exemptions in our school.
Trinity welcomes a diverse range of families to our community, however they are formed, and whatever they look like. We believe that this welcome is an expression of our Christian values and ethos. Just like the participation of all our boys and staff, regardless of faith position, in things like Chapel, Religious Education and Outreach/Service is an expression of our corporate commitment to Christian values and ethos.
We acknowledge that all members of our community, faith or no faith, are going to be at different places on different social and ethical issues. And as an educational community we welcome and engage with a great diversity of viewpoints and experiences expressed in a spirit of learning, humility, respect and mutual care.
Trinity is deeply enriched by the diversity within our School community and we are absolutely committed to being a place where all people, most especially our students, feel they are safe, supported and belong.

FROM THE HEADMASTER
The undoubted highlight of last week was the Junior School Art Show. Every student had artwork on display, with the diversity of style and artistic talent being quite amazing. We hear a lot about the need to develop creativity in our students, particularly in terms of requisite workforce skills in our ever-changing economy, and Art is clearly a domain where this can be achieved. Much credit, therefore, to the Junior School team in this regard. And credit to the Senior School Art staff too, for creating an environment which sees around 30% of all Year 11 and 12 students studying a creative arts subject.
Last week was also highlighted by all Year 10 boys attending a Leppitt Leadership camp at either Eppalock or Somers. Led by staff, OTGs and, especially, Year 11 students, the boys engaged in leadership training exercises. There are many leadership opportunities on offer at Trinity across the vast range of activities at the School. Over the next couple of weeks, we will conduct interviews for our major leadership roles (Captain and Vice-captains) and other positions will be filled later in the term and over the course of next year.
This week, work on the renovation of our Junior School playground and oval will commence. The oval will be levelled and a brand new playground installed, along with a new entrance to the Junior School from the Charles/Wellington Street corner. These are significant works and in order for them to be completed for the beginning of the 2019 School year, work needs to commence at the beginning of this term. Fencing has started to go up around the oval and playground today, and will be replaced by full board hoarding later in the week.
Good luck to our Year 10 Debating team (Andrew Lim, Rishov Doloi, William Browning and Finn Horan) in the DAV Grand Final this week.
On Friday, we will formally celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Trinity/Ruyton Coordinate Program. The Program is very much alive and well, with a clear majority of students (both boys and girls) declaring themselves in favour of it and recommending it to younger students in a survey conducted late last term.
Saturday sees the opening of the summer sports season. Fingers crossed the weather will be kind to us.
Of course, our Year 12 boys are very much in the home straight. Their last day at School is on Wednesday 24 October and exams commence for some as early as the following Wednesday. They are working hard, and we look forward to celebrating their time at Trinity at the Valedictory Dinner in the Melbourne Cricket Club Dining Room on Tuesday 23.
And spare a thought for Hugh Bowman, Kyle Winkler, David Greig and Alec Alder, who on Thursday this week show their F1 talents to Meghan and Harry at Government House. I can’t wait for the photographs.

JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWS
Australian National Eisteddfod Speech and Drama Competition
Congratulations to Jack Kingston in Year 4 who competed in the Australian National Eisteddfod Speech and Drama Competition in Canberra in September.
Jack competed in 10 solo events; he was the winner of seven events and placed second in three events. A wonderful achievement!
Safety around our school
We would like to request your support in raising awareness amongst our school community about ongoing traffic issues during the peak school drop-off and pick-up periods. As you know, Trinity Grammar School becomes extremely crowded with vehicles during these busy times, and this can pose a threat to student safety if parking restrictions are not heeded.
While parking officers work hard patrolling our school and issuing fines to motorists who disregard road rules, you can help by reminding parents that illegal parking endangers students.
Helping to make school drop-off and pick-up safer for everyone
Illegal parking in a school zone is not only inconsiderate to other motorists, it threatens the safety of students. If parking officers witness a motorist breaking any of the following traffic rules, they will issue them with a fine.
- Double parking restricts the view of other drivers, obstructs traffic flow, and means children have to get out of the vehicle onto the road. It also blocks the passage of any emergency vehicles which might need to pass.
- School crossings are there to ensure children cross the road safely. Parking up to 20 metres before or 10 metres after a designated school crossing is illegal.
- The designated kiss and ride areas outside schools are No Parking, with a maximum two-minute standing time. This gives parents enough time to kiss and drop off/collect their children before moving on to allow the next vehicle to follow suit.
- School zone speed limits are clearly signposted and must be adhered to.
Walk or ride to school with your child
Walking or riding to school with your child is a healthy and enjoyable way to avoid the inevitable traffic snarls at drop-off or pick-up time. If you must drive, consider parking a few streets away and accompanying your child on foot the rest of the way.
If you would like any more information about keeping our school zone safe during drop-off and pick-up periods, please click here.
Junior School House Athletics Carnival
The 2018 Junior School House Athletics Carnival was run at the Doncaster Athletics Track on Thursday 11 October. Throughout the day, boys participated in a range of track and field events, concluding with the age group circular relays. The final event was a very exciting relay involving parents, Year 8 Mentors, staff and Athletics Captains.
Once again several records were equalled or broken –
- Will Katic set new records in the 11 Years High Jump and the 11 Years Hurdles
- Charlie Harris equalled the 10 Years High Jump record
The Individual Age Group Champions were –
- 9 Years: 1st – Jake Witkowski, 2nd – Patrick Tee-Wu, 3rd – Luca Hartnett
- 10 Years: 1st – Will Johnson, 2nd – Daytona Derbogosijan, 3rd – Charlie Harris
- 11 Years: 1st – Will Katic , equal 2nd – Charlie Sammartino and James Robinson, 3rd – Niklas du Toit
- 12 Years: 1st – Samuel Mazzei, 2nd – Allan Liang, 3rd – Edward Peng
The overall Junior School Athletics Champion for 2018 was Will Katic, who amassed an incredible 153 points narrowly beating Samuel Mazzei on 150 points.
The final results for the 2018 House Athletics Cup after 129 events are:
- equal 1st – Friend and Summers (2546)
- 3rd – Inglis
- 4th – Henderson
The Spirit Cup was awarded to Henderson House.
Finally, thank you to parents and friends who were able to come along and support the boys and to the Educational Support Staff who assisted with the set up and pack up of the event.

SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS
European Music Tour
Seventeen students attended a two-week European Tour to 10 cities in Germany, Austria, Italy and Slovenia. They sang and performed a very busy schedule and they were often praised for their musicianship, positive demeanour and wonderful presentation. The boys had a wonderful experience and were a real credit to themselves, Trinity and Melbourne. Thank you to Ms Stanic, Mrs McCoppin and Mr Kelley for staffing the trip.
Oenpelli and Arabunna Trips
Two small groups of boys attended two very different trips to Indigenous communities during the holidays.
Four boys spent a week in Oenpelli, Northern Territory, teaching Science, visiting rock art sites and the art gallery with Mr Peter Razos and Mrs Kate Veall.
Five boys from Year 5 to Year 9 were accompanied by Ms Jenny Poore, Mr Stewart Lucy and number of parents to Marree in South Australia. The group heard stories from Aboriginal elder, Reg Dodd, travelled the Oodnadatta track and visited Lake Eyre. An extraordinary experience for the boys.
Year 10 Leadership Course
Last week, all the Year 10 boys attended one of two leadership courses: Somers Leaders’ Course or Leppitt Leaders’ Course. Both are excellent programs and we thank Mr Alex Colussa, and the Heads of House for the preparation for Somers, and Mr Alan Daley and Mr Bill Cleary for the preparation for Leppitt. Click here to read a report about the Leppitt Program.
The Leppitt program prepares leaders to assist on the Year 7 and 8 outdoor camps, while the focus of Somers is the House program, Year 10 Mentors and Learning Journeys. Both programs develop boys’ general leadership skills, and we often see a real growth in the boyss attitude to school, their friends and family. Thank you to the staff who assisted with both programs, and to the Year 11 boys who were part of the training team.
Congratulations
Congratulations to the following boys who won Prizes, Awards or Distinctions in the Australian Maths Competition, the Melbourne University Maths Competition, or the Mathematics Competition and Computational and Algorithmic Thinking (CODING). Click here to view a full list of prize winners.
Gaelic Football
Congratulations to Louis Davidson, Lachlan Mulcahy, Jack Cooper and Luke Milner (Year 11) who played in the Victorian Gaelic Football team that defeated WA in the Grand Final.
Host Families
Over the last few years, many of our families have hosted GAP students, language exchange students, billeted sports players or looked after some of our Indigenous boys or international students.
We are always looking for new families who may have a spare room or who may want to take in a GAP student or Indigenous student, and in particular, for Term 4 this year or 2019 and beyond.
A GAP student is usually a university-aged person who is out in Australia for work experience (and a bit of a holiday!), often they are from the UK.
Our Indigenous students are usually in Years 8, 9 or 10. Some stay in one of our boarding houses, but this is not always the case. It can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience to have an ‘extra’ family member.
Please contact Rohan Brown or Tom Purcell if you are interested.
Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition
Lachlan Chen (Year 8) and James Watson (Year 11) achieved Honourable Mentions for their performances in the poetry competition finals held in Term 3 at the Alliance Française in St Kilda.
Thomas Boyd (Year 12) also received an Honourable Mention in the finals of his oral exam at the Alliance Française.
All three boys are to be congratulated for their fine achievement.

Debating
Junior Debating Round 3
In the last week of Term 3 and for the last time this year, the junior debaters gallantly competed against the most formidable opponents – their very own Trinity peers! The topic ‘That violent toys and games should be banned for children’ was quite challenging, but entertaining nevertheless. Congratulations to the following boys who were awarded the title of Best Speaker: William Johnson, Lucas Van Den Berg, Laurie Duckham, Ben Noonan, Cale Martin and Daniel Marcou.
Senior Debating Semi-Final
Congratulations to Year 10 boys Andrew Lim, Rishov Doloi, Finn Horan and William Browning, who qualified for the semi-finals in the Debaters Association of Victoria (DAV) Senior Debating Competition at the end of last term. They persuasively and articulately argued ‘That we should compensate individuals who are criminally prosecuted and found not guilty’ against St Kevin’s, despite their home advantage. The title of Best Speaker was awarded to Rishov Doloi.
The DAV State Semi Finals were hosted at Trinity on Wednesday 10 October. The topic successfully debated by our team was ‘That we should allow soldiers to opt out of conflicts to which they have a moral objection’, with Andrew Lim awarded Best Speaker. Their win has progressed them through to the Grand Final, which will be held on Thursday 18 October at Caulfield Grammar. All spectators are welcome!
Congratulations
Congratulations to Nathan Savundra-Shepherd who received a Swannie Award on Friday evening. This certificate can only be awarded if the recipient is nominated by the DAV as ‘Best Speaker’ in every inter-school debate by the DAV – an outstanding achievement!

The Gala Awards evening was an impressive event held in the Sentosa Resort Ballroom, and attended by approximately 600 people, including Formula 1 CEO Chase Carey, and a number of Singaporean dignitaries.
Competitors enjoyed some time out from judging with a Universal Studios visit and a bus ride around the F1 track finishing with an exclusive pit lane walk.
The competition is a multi-disciplinary test of skills encompassing science, technology, engineering, maths, design and management. Teams are required to engage in designing, testing and racing a miniature F1 car, as well as organising marketing, sponsorship and brand programs.
